Once again we are delighted to connect with you through this newsletter, sharing the latest updates and exciting developments within our community.

As we embark on the summer season filled with initiatives like Wiki Loves Earth, Queering Wikipedia, and more, we invite you to join us in our efforts to enhance the representation and diversity of content on Wikipedia.

It is also full steam ahead in terms of preparations and planning for the Celtic Knot Conference which is fast approaching and set to take place in Waterford this September (read on for more information about scholarships and our Call for Proposals!).

While writing this newsletter, I took a look on Wiki Commons to find a suitable photo for the cover. I searched ‘June in Ireland’ and what I got back was a time capsule of photos from 1921 right up to this year. It was a nice reminder of the magical resource we have access to for free at our fingertips! If you fancy a trip down memory lane take a look here.

The photo I went with in the end was of Puffin Island from 2005, as it feels like it may have been the last time we saw a blue sky!

Together, let’s continue to celebrate our heritage, promote inclusivity, and make Wikipedia a richer resource for everyone.

Wiki Loves Pride at Pride of the Déise

In May, our Irish Language Officer, Amy, gave a bilingual workshop for Wiki Loves Pride during the Festival at Waterford Library. Participants edited in both English and Irish at this event as part of the Queering Wikipedia Campaign.

Queering Wikipedia refers is a campaign that makes an effort to improve the representation of LGBTQ+ topics and individuals on Wikipedia. This initiative aims to address the systemic biases and underrepresentation of queer subjects on the platform.

We are currently looking for any community members that have connections with their local LGBT+ centre or communities around Ireland. Additionally, if you are part of a language group who are wanting to get involved in a Pride-related activity don’t hesitate to contact us. Wiki Loves Pride and Queering Wikipedia will continue throughout the summer until the end of October.

The online Edit-a-thon for Wiki Loves Pride is currently ongoing and you can contribute to that now. You are also very welcome to come to our Irish language online editing meet-ups that happy on the second last Thursday of each month. Here you can pop in and ask questions or just co-work on editing articles together.

Wiki Loves Folkore Winners

In May we were delighted to announce the winners of Wiki Loves Folkore 2024 in Ireland.

Our judges this year included Oein DeBhairduin and Jon O’Sullivan. We  were thoroughly impressed by the creativity and vibrance displayed in each photograph. These images not only showcase the beauty of Irish culture past and present but also ensure its preservation for generations to come.

You check out the winners here.

A huge congratulations to all the winners and thank you to everyone who participated!

Nuacht is Déanaí- An update from our Irish Language Officer

Haigh a chairde!

Mar is gnáth, bhí cúpla seachtain thar a bheith gnóthach! Táim ag súil go mór le huaireanta lánaimseartha a bheith agam ó mhí Iúil (tar éis deontas a fháil ón Foras Wikimedia) agus go mbeidh níos mó ama ann chun gach rud a dhéanamh.

Is Breá le Wiki Bród

Thug mé ceardlann dátheangach do Wiki Loves Pride le linn Fhéile Pride of the Déise ag deireadh na Bealtaine.

Má tá baint ag éinne lena n-ionad áitiúil LADT+ nó pobail timpeall na hÉireann nó má tá aon ghrúpa teanga ag iarraidh a bheith páirteach i ngníomhaíocht a bhaineann le Bhród/cursaí LADT+, ná bíodh drogall ort dul i dteagmháil liom. Tá Wiki Loves Pride agus Queering Wikipedia ar siúl go dtí deireadh mhí Dheireadh Fómhair. Tá an Eagaratón ar líne ar siúl faoi láthair agus is féidir leat cur leis sin anois.

Turas go dtí an Ghearmáin

Beidh mé ag dul go dtí an Ghearmáin, go dtí OT Dortmund chun aoi-léacht a thabhairt ar an nGaeilge sna Spásanna Digiteacha trí Thionscadail Wikimedia an tseachtain seo chugainn. Thug an Dr Maggie Glass cuireadh dom agus tá mé ag súil le tuilleadh nuachta a roinnt as sin nuair a thiocfaidh mé ar ais.

Comhdháil Teangacha Celtic Knot

Mar táim cinnte go bhfuil ár n-iarratais scoláireachta feicthe agat cheana féin agus tá gairm ar pháipéir oscailte faoi láthair do Celtic Knot! Ná déan dearmad na hiarratais a chur isteach chomh luath agus is féidir. Táimid ag súil le tuilleadh eolais a roinnt ar an gclár agus féachaint cad iad na haighneachtaí atá ag teacht isteach.

Má tá sé beartaithe ag éinne freastal ar fhéinmhaoiniú is féidir leat dul i dteagmháil leis an óstán (Tower Hotel Waterford) chun do sheomraí rátaí comhdhála a chur in áirithe. Tá tuilleadh eolais ar an Leathanach Meta anseo.

Má tá duine ar bith a bheadh ag iarraidh cabhrú le haistriúchán (nó iad a ceatrú) ar na leathanaigh Meta don chomhdháil tá fáilte romhat. Bheimis buíoch as an tacaíocht agus muid ag druidim le cúpla mí an-ghnóthach roimh an gcomhdháil.

Le déanaí, ar an 17ú Meitheamh bhí mé ag labhairt le Rossa – atá i gceannas ar an gclár raidió Fios Feasa – ar Raidió na Life faoin gComhdháil. Is féidir éisteacht ar ais leis an eipeasóid anseo murar chuala tú beo é.

Mar is gnáth, má tá smaointe nó tionscadail ar bith agat ar mhaith leat oibriú orthu nó a bheith páirteach iontu déan teagmháil liom le do thoil!

Le gach-dea-ghuí,
