World Environment Day is celebrated annually on the 5th of June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. To celebrate, we are calling upon you to get involved with the Wiki Loves Earth Photo Contest 2025!
World Environment Day, marked annually on 5 June, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. Over the past five decades, the Day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms for environmental outreach. Tens of millions of people participate online and through in-person activities, events and actions around the world.
This year’s theme focuses on ending microplastics. The world produces more than 430 million tonnes of plastic annually, two-thirds of which are short-lived products that soon become waste, filling the ocean and, often, working their way into the human food chain.
Wiki Loves Earth is an international photo contest dedicated to documenting the natural world and thus raising awareness about climate change and environmental protection via Wikimedia Commons. It is open to all, whether you are snapping photos on your phone or are a seasoned professional.
