We are calling on our Irish language Volunteers to find someone to join us at Oireachtas na Samhna this October in Belfast. If you have ever wanted to go, this is your chance! We will be sponsoring a Wikimedian to attend alongside our Oifigeach Gaeilge to help give out information about Vicipéid. Read on to find out more!
Rising Voices Workshop for Irish Langugage Digital Activism at the National Library of Ireland
On July 14th, Wikimedia Community Ireland hosted a Rising Voices Digital Activism Workshop for 20 participants at the National Library of Ireland.
Those in attendance included educators, representatives from Conradh na Gaeilge (a social and cultural organisation which promotes the Irish language in Ireland and worldwide), Gaelgoer (the first Irish language communications app), eSTÓR ( a project aimed to improve machine translation and promote digital language equality in Europe), Raidió na Life, Raidió Rí-Rá and Irish language content creators.
Rising Voices is a Global Voices outreach project that supports underrepresented communities who want to tell their own stories using digital media. The UNESCO minority languages toolkit curriculum served as the basis for the workshop. After presentations and discussion, participants worked together to create a roadmap for Irish language digital activism.

WCI Joins TAROCH Coalition for Open Access to Cultural Heritage
Wikimedia Community Ireland became a member of the TAROCH Coalition for Open Access to Cultural Heritage. Launched by Creative Commons (CC) the TAROCH Coalition (Towards a Recommendation on Open Cultural Heritage), is a collaborative effort to achieve the adoption of a UNESCO standard-setting instrument to improve open access to cultural heritage.
With the support of organisations and institutions worldwide, TAROCH is engaging UNESCO Member States to champion policies that remove barriers, foster collaboration, and unlock cultural heritage for all. This effort aligns with UNESCO’s mission to promote the free flow of knowledge and preserve our shared history.
Ceardlann: Is Breá le Vicí Bród / Wiki Loves Pride Workshop at Waterford Pride
As part of the 2025 Pride of Waterford programme, the Wikimedia Community Ireland organised a public workshop as part of Wiki Loves Pride. The aim of the workshop was to encourage LGBT+ people and allies to share their stories, culture and history on Wikipedia and Wikipedia in an active, creative and bilingual way.
This free, bilingual event introduced participants to the world of Wikimedia and explored how open knowledge can be a powerful tool for digital activism, language revitalisation, and visibility for marginalised communities, especially the LGBTQIA+ community in Ireland.
Printed and online guidebooks were shared, and a small but powerful collection of archival material was available: old copies of GCN magazines, versions of the Pride of the Déise supplement from the local Waterford News & Star newspaper, and historical books relating to LGBTQ+ culture in Ireland.

Wiki Loves Pride Photo Contest is Open until the end of the month!
This photography competition invites you to document and celebrate queer life, past and present in Ireland. Whether it’s a bustling Pride parade, a quiet moment of reflection, or a historic queer landmark, your photos help bring visibility to LGBTQI+ lives and stories on Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia and Vicipéid.

MeithealWiki August Community Editathon for Wiki Loves Pride
Each month, we will be hosting an online Meitheal or community editing event in English and Irish to improve content related to a different theme. Then at our Community meetings, we can celebrate how much we accomplished together, share any challenges or new snippets of knowledge we came across while editing! We will also be able to help each other out and share skills.
This August we are celebrating LGBTQIA+ voices, stories, and knowledge for Wiki Loves Pride.
