- “Professional Multimedia Online e‑dictionaries with Speed and Low Budget using LinguaLibre.org” by Hugo Lopez (Wikimedia France)
A hands-on workshop introducing Lingua Libre, the tool enabling contributors to create pronunciation recordings and vocabulary lists for endangered or minority languages. To date, it’s generated over 1.4 million recordings across 312 languages. - “Lightning Talk: Wikifunctions and Smaller Languages” by Nicolas Vigneron
An overview of Wikifunctions, launched in July 2023—empowering smaller language communities with accessible and reusable code functionality. - “Democratisation of Public Data” by Jason Evans (National Library of Wales)
A creative exploration of how local communities can collaborate with institutions to enrich Wikimedia projects—through sound archives, photographs, and place-name preservation, using the case of Eryri Park rangers and the Welsh Place‑Names Committee. - “When Can We Cite Low-Resourced Language Oral Histories in Wikimedia Projects?” by Subhashish PanigrahiThough Wikipedia aims to become “the sum of all human knowledge,” it does not allow citing oral history, a form that most of the world’s communities use to disseminate knowledge. At the OpenSpeaks Archives, we are building practical tools to document low-resourced languages lacking scripts or historical writing traditions. This session would delve into the current citational barriers for oral history in such languages, particularly in Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, and detail some of the alternate citational pathways.
