Happy New Year to you all! 2026 is off to a flying start and we’ve hit the ground running — preparing plans, welcoming new team members, and kicking off exciting campaigns. Here’s a taste of what we’ve been working on.
Fáilte, Welcome Laura!
We’re delighted to welcome Laura, our new Oifigeach Gaeilge (Irish Language Officer), who joined us at the beginning of the month. We’re thrilled to have her on the team and looking forward to working together to strengthen the Irish language on Vicipéid and across Wikimedia projects.
New Podcast: Wikipedia @ 25
A new episode of our podcast is coming out later this week! We sit down with Shannon and Eugene to celebrate Wikipedia @ 25; looking back at the encyclopedia’s growth, the history of WCI, and chatting about the future.
Funding for Seachtain na Gaeilge
We have exciting news! We’ve been awarded €800 from the Ciste Spreagtha (Conradh na Gaeilge/Energia) to support our events for Seachtain na Gaeilge in March. We’re also awaiting news on funding from Foras na Gaeilge. Full details of our events will be coming soon!
Wiki Loves Folklore: Starting This Saturday!
The international photography competition Wiki Loves Folklore kicks off on 1st February and runs until 31st March. This competition celebrates folklore and cultural heritage, from traditional customs to crafts, from festivals to local stories. Get ready to upload your photos to Wikimedia Commons!
Art+Feminism: Upcoming Collaboration
Art+Feminism is a global movement focused on increasing the representation of women and non-binary people on Wikipedia. Each year, people around the world organise editing events to create new articles and improve existing ones.
We’re working with Scoil Mhuire Luimnigh and the Hunt Museum to run a Wiki skills workshop in mid-February. The students’ projects will be displayed on International Women’s Day 2026. Read more about this collaboration here!
Community Meeting: Tomorrow!
Our first community meeting of 2026 takes place Tuesday 27th January at 6pm online. We have so much to share with you, plans for the year, new projects, and opportunities to get involved.
This is your chance to hear about everything that’s happening and meet other community members. Everyone welcome!
