Are you interested in research, feminist activism, and cultural heritage? The WikiWomen Erasmus+ project is here to equip students with the digital skills to use their Gaelige to help close the gender gap in a real-world setting- namely the World’s largest Digital Encyclopedia-Wikipedia.
This initiative aims to inspire students to use their digital citizenship to make the internet a more equal place and to increase the content available online in the Irish Languge.
WikiWomen started as an Erasmus+ project and has grown into a collaborative educational course designed to promote digital literacy in Irish. The course aims to enhance digital literacy, research, and language skills among participants. It emphasizes two key social causes: recognizing the contributions of women and revitalizing the Irish language. It offers a freely accessible course and teacher’s toolkit for equipping students with essential information literacy and digital skills that are crucial for their success in an increasingly complex digital world. It gives students the chance to learn how to recognize misinformation and write from a neutral point of view while researching topics that they are interested in exploring. The project has been integrated into transition year programmes in its piloting phase and taught in Ireland by a biology teacher, art teacher and history teacher. It is an adaptable course that can easily fit into a range of subjects on the Irish curriculum.

How the WikiWomen program helps students recognize misinformation
The WikiWomen Erasmus+ program empowers students to critically engage with information by teaching them how to contribute to and edit Wikipedia, a platform that values reliable sourcing and factual accuracy. Here are the key ways the program helps students recognize misinformation:
- Research Skills Development: Through the curriculum, students learn how to conduct thorough research, evaluate sources, and discern credible information from unreliable content.
- Understanding Wikipedia’s Guidelines: Students familiarize themselves with Wikipedia’s editorial standards, which emphasize the importance of verifiable information and reliable citations, helping them identify misinformation more effectively.
- Critical Thinking : The program encourages analytical thinking by prompting students to question the reliability of sources and the motivations behind the information they encounter online.
- Digital Literacy Education: By integrating digital skills training, students become more adept at navigating online platforms, recognizing bias, and assessing the accuracy of information shared in digital spaces.
- Engagement with Real-World Issues: As students write about underrepresented women, they are encouraged to seek out diverse perspectives and narratives, fostering a broader understanding of the complexities of information dissemination.
In addition, our initiative focuses on equipping students with essential digital skills to navigate misinformation effectively while fostering engagement with social issues, such as gender equality. By empowering students to create reliable content in both English and Irish, we not only promote the use of the Irish language but also enhance digital literacy through the production of high-quality online content. Attendees learn to discern what constitutes reliable and valid sources of information by contributing to the world’s largest and most trusted encyclopedia in Irish.
As participants engage in this process, they learn to identify and produce credible content that interests them. This is achieved by positively contributing to a global corpus of existing materials on Wikipedia, which stands as the world’s most visited academic resource. Notably, 9 out of 10 online researchers begin their inquiries on Wikipedia, highlighting the program’s unique potential to reduce the spread of misinformation. Through practical, hands-on activities, students gain a deeper understanding of what constitutes credible and truthful information.
Key Components
- Curriculum for Students: This curriculum is designed to help students understand the importance of Wikipedia and encourages them to write biographies of significant women who currently lack online representation.
- Available in Multiple Languages: The materials are available in English, Irish, and other languages such as Frisian and Basque, catering to various age groups.
- Tried and Tested in Schools: The curriculum has been piloted in schools across the Netherlands, Ireland, and Spain.
- Resources for Teachers: This toolkit is intended to assist teachers in teaching digital and research skills through Wikipedia.
- Collaboration with GLAMs: It provides a framework for integrating Wikipedia into the curriculum and includes resources for collaboration with galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs).
Our curriculum, thoughtfully designed by Irish secondary schools, universities, and language institutions, guides students in creating high-quality, verifiable content that is readily accessible to both their peers and the international community. Attendees learn to author encyclopedic content, which must be written from a neutral point of view. This entails verifying information through reliable sources and presenting it fairly, proportionately, and without editorial bias. In doing so, participants learn to identify credible content through the hands-on creation and publication of meaningful materials.
Already, this program has made a significant positive impact on students in Ireland and across Europe, particularly concerning the Irish language. Participants enhance their digital literacy while generating reliable information about local cultural issues. They are encouraged to develop content that resonates with them and to explore underrepresented topics.
Under the expert guidance of our mentors, students focus on researching subjects of personal interest, including notable women and their contributions. As a result, our program has successfully led to the creation of numerous new encyclopedia pages, thereby enriching the representation of women in Irish history, science, and culture.
Objectives

- Promote Gender Equality: Teaches students about this prevelant and on-going issue that no part of the world is immune to. It helps them to understand how it manifests within history, the media and digital information and how this can be harmful to society as a whole.
- Empowerment through Wikipedia: Our goal is to create a generation of students who can enhance their language’s digital presence by utilizing their research and language skills on Wikipedia.
- Encourage Social Engagement: Collaborate with schools, Wikipedia foundations, and language organizations to engage participants in improving online content, advocating for gender equality, and highlighting women’s visibility in Irish culture.
