We finally have found ourselves at the brink of summertime, our favourite time of year! Here at WCI, we are very excited about our wholeheartedly diving into our upcoming campaigns including Wiki Loves Pride and Wiki Loves Earth! We also have an exciting announcement regarding the Celtic Knot Languages Conference and a new podcast episode so read on to find out more!

Wiki Loves Earth

We are thrilled to announce that Wiki Loves Earth is taking place in Ireland for the 5th time! Starting on June 1st the international photography competition will be open until the 31st of July

The contest aims to highlight natural heritage across the island of Ireland to encourage people to capture pictures and upload them under a free licence so they can then be re-used not only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone!

You can find a list of eligible sites from each province of Ireland, along with the competition rules and guidelines on our website and on Wiki Commons. You can also check out some of the winners from last year’s contest for inspiration or just a little virtual nature break!

Wiki Loves Pride

Wiki Loves Pride is a global campaign to expand and improve LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. This year, we are excited to announce that it will start in June and continue all summer long!

The next event coming up for WikiLovesPride is a bilingual workshop in Waterford as part of the Pride of the Déise festival on Thursday 30th May. This year, we hope to continue our Pride campaign throughout the summer and into the Autumn. Our goal is to work with as many Irish LGBTQ+ community members as possible through Pride Organizations across the country and provide them with resources to help them start editing and writing on Wikipedia.

If you are a member of any LGBTQ+ community group in your area and would like to organise a virtual or in-person event please reach out!

As the above workshop is on the last Thursday of the month we will be postponing our end-of-the-month online event to the week after, and it will be on the 6th of June. You can participate in the online edit by going through this link. The Event will take place from the 30th of May until the end of June and for Wiki Loves Pride we will be running many of these events until October as part of the Queering Wikipedia campaign.

Bigí linn agus Bígí Bródúil!

Celtic Knot Conference

We are currently preparing scholarship applications and open calls for programs for the fast-approaching Celtic Knot conference this September. We are in the midst of reaching out to inspiring keynote speakers and preparing a vibrant cultural program.

Scholarship applications will open in June and close at the end of the month so keep an eye out on the events page and our social media channels for updates! We will be offering in-person and e-scholarships along with holding an open call for contributions.

Wiki for Human Rights Campaign and Podcast with Co-Founder of Pocket Forests

This year, as we mark the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the WikiForHumanRights campaign is more relevant than ever. The campaign is dedicated to ensuring that everyone has access to neutral, fact-based, and up-to-date information to advocate for a sustainable future that places every human’s right to a healthy environment at the forefront.

This year our focus is not just on the Right to a Healthy Environment but also on how understanding and harnessing knowledge from the grassroots up can lead us to sustainable solutions.

For the campaign, we got the chance to speak to Catherine Cleary, Irish Times journalist and co-founder of Pocket Forests on the WCI podcast. Pocket Forests is a prime example of how grassroots initiatives can have a significant impact. They have worked with communities to successfully carry out urban greening with long-lasting community and environmental benefits.

We had a fascinating conversation with Catherine who is a wealth of knowledge on all things biodiversity and urban greening. We touched on the benefits of green spaces for our mental health, how people can feel more empowered in their communities in the face of climate change, why soil matters and why getting back to our roots (literally!) is crucial now more than ever. You can listen to the podcast here (perhaps while doing some forest bathing yourself), it is not one to be missed!

Nuacht is Déanaí- An update from our Irish Language Officer

Haigh a chairde Vicí!

Níl mé in ann a chreidiúint go bhfuil Bealtaine thart agus an bhliain beagnach leath críochnaithe. Bhíomar gnóthach ag pleanáil feachtais atá le teacht, ag críochnú iarratais ar mhaoiniú, ag ullmhú d’fheachtais atá le teacht, agus ag eagrú na comhdhála Celtic Knot.

Feachtais le Teacht

Tá WikiLovesEarth agus WikLovesPride againn ag tosú i mí an Mheithimh. Don dá fheachtas seo beimid ag iarraidh go n-uaslódálfar pictiúir go Commons agus go nglacfaidh sibh go léir páirt in Edit-a-thons i rith mhí an Mheithimh.

Is é an chéad imeacht eile a bheidh á reáchtáil agam le linn WikiLovesPride ná ceardlann agus eagaratón dhátheangach i bPort Láirge mar chuid d’fhéile Bhróid na nDéise ar an nDéardaoin 30ú Bealtaine. I rith an tsamhraidh agus isteach san Fhómhar tá súil agam go mbeidh i dteagmháil agus ag oabir leis an oiread ball pobail Éireann LADTA+ agus is féidir trí Eagraíochtaí Bhród ar fud na tíre agus acmhainní a sholáthar dóibh chun cabhrú leo tosú ar eagarthóireacht agus scríobh ar WIkipedia. Má tá tú mar bhall d’aon ghrúpa pobail LADTA+ i do cheantar agus gur mhaith leat imeacht fíorúil nó pearsanta a eagrú déan teagmháil liom le do thoil!

Toisc go bhfuil an ceardlann thuas ar an Déardaoin deiridh den mhí beimid ag cur ár n-imeacht ar líne deireadh na míosa siar go dtí an tseachtain ina dhiaidh, agus beidh sé ar an 6ú Meitheamh.

Is féidir leat páirt a ghlacadh san eagarthóireacht ar líne ach dul tríd an nasc seo. Beidh an Eagaratón ar siúl ón 30ú Bealtaine go deireadh mhí an Mheithimh agus le haghaidh Wiki Loves Pride beidh go leor de na himeachtaí seo á reáchtáil againn go dtí mí Dheireadh Fómhair mar chuid den fheachtas Queering Wikipedia.

Comhdháil Celtic Knot

Tá iarratais ar scoláireachtaí agus glaonna oscailte do chláir á n-ullmhú againn faoi láthair don chomhdháil Celtic Knot atá ag teacht go tapa. Táimid tar éis dul i dteagmháil le roinnt príomhchainteoirí agus tá súil againn go mbeidh siad ar fáil chun freastal agus cur i láthair a dhéanamh ag an gcomhdháil i mí Mheán Fómhair. Beidh iarratais ar scoláireachtaí ag oscailt i mí an Mheithimh agus ag druidim ag deireadh na míosa mar sin coinnigh súil ar do bhoscaí isteach!

Táim ag obair ar ár gcláir chultúrtha faoi láthair chun a chinntiú go bhfaigheann an lucht freastail agus na haíonna taithí chomh mór agus is féidir ar chultúr na hÉireann agus iad anseo in Éirinn.

Mar is gnáth, déan teagmháil liom le do thoil má tá imeacht ar mhaith leat a eagrú nó má tá aon smaointe agat chun obair Vicí a scaipeadh.

Le gach-dea ghuí,

Amy
