Calling all photographers and nature enthusiasts in Ireland!
Wikimedia Community Ireland is delighted to open the Wiki Loves Earth 2025, international photo competition on May 1st.
Dedicated to documenting our stunning natural heritage, the competition covers the whole island of Ireland (the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland) in collaboration with Wikimedia UK.
The Wiki Loves Earth Photo contest aims to capture the diverse natural landscapes and biodiversity found on our small island, which makes up an integral part of the global biosphere. By uploading snapshots of landscapes, various flora, fauna, and fungi, we create a database of images that will be important to demonstrate the impacts of climate change as time goes on.
By adding these images to Wikipedia with an open license, we can help to create articles that better illustrate how climate change is affecting the Earth. In turn, this can help to contribute to efforts to counteract its impact.
So let’s get these images on Wikipedia articles, and make a difference!

What Can You Photograph?/ Eligible Sites
We ask participants to take pictures of local natural protected areas, and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. The aim of the contest is to highlight the Irish natural heritage across the island of Ireland to encourage people to capture pictures and to put them under a free licence which can be re-used not only in Wikipedia but everywhere by everyone.You can find lists of eligible sites in Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht as well as more details on the Northern Ireland page.
Think Breathtaking coastlines and beaches, majestic mountains, lush forests, lakes and rivers and flora and fauna.

Rules
- Open to All: Wiki Loves Earth 2024 is Open to all, whether you’re a seasoned professional or a passionate amateur; everyone is welcome to participate.
- Photos may have been taken at any time. The key criteria to be eligible for the contest are that they are to be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons between May 1st and July 31st 2025, and that you have taken them yourself.
- Free to enter: There’s no fee to join the competition.
- The full WLE rules can be read here, but in short:
- Photos need to be a two-megapixel minimum image
- be taken by you
- be of a protected area (see these lists for Leinster, Munster, Ulster and Connacht) in Ireland, including the area’s flora and fauna
- be uploaded using the links in the lists above
- be described with the location, and co-ordinates if possible
- be uploaded between 1 May – 31 July 2025.

Special Wiki Muir Category for 2025
Muir means Sea as Gaeilge, and to celebrate our new collaboration with Taigh Ceilidh (Scotland) and Wikimedia UK, we are launching a special prize for any photos with a Sea theme. This can be of the ocean, cliffs, habitats, wildlife, beaches, shipwrecks, rockpools, sea caves and swimming spots.

Contest Timeline
