As autumn begins, we’re delighted to share some exciting updates from across our community! September is always a busy month, and this year is no exception.
This month, we’re celebrating the breathtaking winners of Wiki Loves Earth 2025, whose images bring Ireland’s natural heritage vividly to life, while also turning our attention to Wiki Loves Monuments (open until the end of the month!), inviting photographers to capture the richness of Ireland’s built heritage. Alongside these contests, we’re gathering the community for online meet-ups, editathons, and a brand-new podcast episode exploring life and history at Altidore Castle. And, of course, we’re counting down to the return of Celtic Knot 2025, where language communities will come together once more to share, collaborate, and inspire.

Wikimedia UK and Wikimedia Community Ireland are delighted to announce the Celtic Knot Online Celebration Day 2025, taking place virtually on Tuesday, 23rd September, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (BST/IST).
This special online event invites contributors, advocates, and community members working with Celtic and other minority and minoritised languages to reconnect and celebrate the progress made since our in-person gathering in Ireland last year.
The programme will feature a dynamic mix of presentations, lightning talks, interactive workshops, and community-led activities—all hosted via Zoom. It’s an opportunity to share updates, exchange ideas, and explore new collaborations that support the growth of Wikimedia’s language communities.

Announcing the Winners of the Wiki Loves Earth Photo Contest 2025 in Ireland and Northern Ireland
After much deliberation on behalf of our fabulous judging panel, we are happy to announce the winners of Wiki Loves Earth 2025 in Ireland and Northern Ireland!
The photographs chosen will each win a wonderful prize, with some progressing onto the international stage of the contest. All photos that were entered will be used on Wikimedia to showcase Ireland’s natural heritage, with many being very useful in education and knowledge, as they now illustrate Wikipedia articles about different protected landscapes which did not previously have images to accompany them.
This year, we had a whopping 635 entries (529 from Ireland and 106 from Northern Ireland). On behalf of WCI, I give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who entered the contest. Your contributions to open knowledge do not go unnoticed!

Women’s History Network Annual Conference
This September, our Projects manager, Sophie, was delighted to be present at the Women’s History Network’s Annual Conference. She presented a paper on Alternative Routes for Digital Activism with a case study on Art+Feminism and WikiWomen Erasmus+. The audience was also invited to get involved in an editathon as part of the workshop.

We are delighted to announce the distinguished judges for the Wiki Loves Monuments Photo Contest 2025 in Ireland!
Hosted by Wikimedia Community Ireland, Wiki Loves Monuments is a photography contest that showcases Irish-built heritage from all regions. It also aims to celebrate and encourage the preservation and promotion of built heritage via Wikimedia Projects.
From churches to bridges, canal locks to market halls, every spot on our interactive map is a piece of Ireland’s built heritage that needs a photograph, which means we need your help.

Join the September MeithealWiki: Community Online Wikipedia Editathon for Wiki Loves Monuments!
Each month, we will be hosting an online Meitheal or community editing event in English and Irish to improve content related to a different theme. Then at our Community meetings, we can celebrate how much we accomplished together, share any challenges or new snippets of knowledge we came across while editing! We will also be able to help each other out and share skills.
This September, we are celebrating the launch of the International Photo Contest dedicated to documenting built heritage, Wiki Loves Monuments.
